You'd have to pull a knife to get me to see some of the films I watched in the Sixties. Morose message movies no longer do it for me. Their themes are already well-covered in the newspapers. Interesting films are always in fashion - "Battle of Algiers" is a good example - but with rare exception, it is nice to feel better when the closing credits hit the screen.
So what are some "good mood movies?" Consider these:
- Local Hero
- Michael
- Cinema Paradiso
- A Night at the Opera
- The In-Laws (with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin)
- Bowfinger
- Finding Nemo
- Groundhog Day
- Kate & Leopold
- Almost any Harry Potter film
- Moonstruck
- The Muse
- Napoleon Dynamite
- O Brother, Where Art Thou?
- Sullivan's Travels
- Nobody's Fool
- Other People's Money
- Radio Days
- The Rookie
- Hoosiers
- Shakespeare in Love
- Topsy-Turvy
- To Catch a Thief
- Strictly Ballroom
- The Freshman
- Charade
- How to Steal a Million
- Tom Jones
- Galaxy Quest
- Get Shorty
- My Favorite Year
- Harvey
- Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines
- The Ladykillers
- The Pink Panther
- A Shot in the Dark
- It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
- Father of the Bride (Steve Martin version)
- As Good As It Gets
- Little Miss Sunshine
- The Madness of King George
- Animal House
- Moneyball
- The Taming of the Shrew
- A Day at the Races
- You Can't Take It with You
- Murder By Death
- Nicholas Nickleby
- A Thousand Clowns
- The Nightmare Before Christmas
- Pirates of the Caribbean (the first one)
- The Producers
- A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
- Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law)
- Sherlock Holmes - A Game of Shadows
- Beverly Hills Cop
- Breakfast at Tiffany's
- Adaptation
- Office Space
- Airplane!
- Men in Black
- Ghostbusters
- The Addams Family
- Young Frankenstein
- Arsenic and Old Lace
- Caddyshack
- The Princess Bride
- His Girl Friday
- Sleeper
- Best in Show
- The Naked Gun
- Duck Soup
- Dr. Strangelove
- Play It Again, Sam
- The Big Lebowski
Any of the "Thin Man" movies with Myrna Loy and William Powell would lighten and/or brighten my day. S
ReplyDeleteSteve,
ReplyDeleteGreat addition!
Michael
Silence of the Lambs (a truly scary movie), Stripes (one funny line after another), Rear Window, Dreamcatcher, The Big Night. . .
ReplyDeleteKurt,
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I should note that this may be the only time in the history of the world that "Silence of the Lambs" has been nominated as a "Good Mood" movie.
Michael
Great list! I might add Cool Hand Luke.
ReplyDeleteVince,
ReplyDeleteA great film with truly memorable lines.
Thanks!
Michael
Oops. Skipped over the "mood" addition.
ReplyDeleteKurt,
