Is Spain the weakest link in the campaign to control illegal immigration to Europe?
David Rennie, writing in The Telegraph, thinks so.
An excerpt:
In the words of Teresa Fernandez de la Vega, the Spanish deputy PM: "It's obvious that some members of the union don't see the extreme problem Spain faces."
She went on: "There is no common European policy on immigration and one must be created. We want to do it well and quickly."
Well, just wait a minute. When I was in the Canary Islands, senior local officials boasted to me that almost all the migrants would soon be flown to the Spanish mainland, and then would be let free after a few weeks, with a piece of paper telling them to leave the country.
Which they promptly do, but not for home, instead heading for the rest of Europe.
