This New York Times article on a dwindling recruitment pool for city managers doesn't surprise me.
City managers have thankless jobs. They serve as a convenient scapegoat for city councils, have zero job security, and are a target for community cranks. If they get fired - and that happens frequently - they have to uproot their families and move to another community.
Sounds pretty attractive, doesn't it?
