Bed and Breakfast: Prescott

This post is being typed on a chair in a bed and breakfast place in Prescott, Arizona. I am surrounded by "quaint" and that does not easily embrace computers. The inn is close to the town square, which is charming and the place where Barry Goldwater launched his presidential campaign. Across from one side of the square is Whiskey Row, a string of bars and cafes which, once upon a time, was pretty wild but is now tamed by civilization. Then again, I haven't been there on a Saturday night.

Several years ago, Sam Steiger, a former congressman and notably blunt politician [He once quipped that politicians have two more brain cells than horses; an advantage which keeps them from moving their bowels during parades] was drinking with some friends on Whiskey Row and decided that a more convenient crosswalk was needed so the drinkers could stumble over to the greenery of the town square. After a few more, Sam got some whitewash and painted a crosswalk. Following some huffing, the city government gave in and a straighter crosswalk remains to this day. Steiger later ran for and won the office of mayor. His campaign signs just read, "Sam for Mayor."

It is hard to dislike a place like this.
