When times are strange, it is tempting either to seek escape in literature or to go the opposite direction in search of doomsday or extreme scenarios. A few books to consider:
- The Road by Cormac McCarthy
- 1984 by George Orwell
- Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
- Children of Men by P.D. James
- Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle
- Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick
- The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham
- The Postman by David Brin
- The Pesthouse by Jim Crace
- The White Plague by Frank Herbert
- Malevil by Robert Merle
- I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
- Earth Abides by George R. Stewart
- A Canticle for Lebowitz by Walter Smith
- The Stand by Stephen King
- Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
- Others?
Non-Fiction, but would Man's Search For Meaning fit? V. Frankle

Hard hard times described.
Ooh, Canticle for Leibowitz, an old favorite! And the Postman, which made a good movie too. How about Diary of Ann Frank, or does it not qualify because it's not a novel?
