When you read the story of United 93, the flight that rebelled against the terrorists on 9/11, it is natural to conclude that if the murderers had known the qualities of the passengers, they would have avoided seizing that flight. The passenger and crew roster consisted of a diverse group of achievers; people who knew how to make decisions and deal with stress. It is not surprising that, once informed of what was happening, they refused to react passively.
It takes nothing from their heroism to note that if you were to know the backgrounds of those on many similar flights, you would find an equivalent collection of talent, bravery, and determination.
When it comes to brains and courage, this nation has a very deep bench.
Never count us out.
