    Hi Michael,

    I've always liked Pyrrhic Victory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrrhic_victory) and crossing the Rubicon (http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/cross+the+Rubicon).

    Another favourite is degringolade (http://www.merriam-webster.com/word/word.php?date=Feb-13-2008) though largely because of the Urban Dictionary's alternative definition ("A drink mix that turns you into a white person" - http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=degringolade).
