They were. Several years back I read Tom Wolfe's "A Man in Full" in which the main character discovers the wisdom of Epictetus. The book was fun but it should probably be read periodically for a reminder of how to think like a stoic in the modern world.
Reminds me of the White Queen from Alice in Wonderland:
