This brings back treasured memories from 1963 when I was a music student at FSU. Casals rehearsed and conducted a performance of El Pessebre, his oratorio, by the combined voice and instrumental resources of the school of music. He was there three days and I got to watch and hear the rehearsals and final performance. He showed all the effects of old age, but when he mounted the podium and began conducting he had the energy and excitement of a much younger man. There was some murmuring about Marta, his wife, who was sixty years younger, but she took good care of him, attending to his every need.
