Management Insight from the Politicos

Most books by politicians or political appointees are so self-serving or poorly-written that they don't deserve your time. Not surprisingly, they rarely contain insight which can be helpful to managers. Here are some exceptions:
  • Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy.
  • Six Crises by Richard M. Nixon
  • Turnaround: Crisis, Leadership, and the Olympic Games by Mitt Romney
  • Leadership by Rudolph W. Giuliani
  • Governing America by Joseph A, Califano, Jr.
  • Before the Fall: An Inside View of the Pre-Watergate White House by William Safire
  • Thirteen Days: A Memoir of the Cuban Missile Crisis by Robert F. Kennedy

  1. I'd also suggest Nixon's book, Leaders. It's a bit uneven, but the profiles are generally sharp and don't seem to be covered anywhere else.

  2. Wally,

    That's an excellent choice!

My copy walked out of the house a few years back and I need to retrieve it. Nixon wrote several memorable chapters but lately I've been thinking of the one on Lee Kuan Yew. We need more leaders with his insight.
