- I grew up in a neighborhood in Phoenix which had a lot of blue collar workers, some white collar, a few business-owners and lawyers, and one judge. The parents of my friends included a bread truck driver, a teacher, a sales clerk, a sign company owner, and a cop. In those days, it was not unusual for a judge to live next door to a nurse. We lost something important when neighborhoods changed.
- A letter to the editor in today's Arizona Republic newspaper suggested that Labor Day be changed to Labor-Management Day. The writer noted that the efforts of many business owners go unrecognized. Although I'm not sure if I'd go so far as to change the holiday, he has a point.
- Some of the hardest-working people out there are doctors, lawyers, and managers. The term "working class" is grossly inaccurate.
- The idea that labor or management is always right is ludicrous.
- There is something about bricklaying which exemplifies the beauty and precision of good work. Fine carpentry is also on many an "envy list."
