I grew up with this song, but my best remembered version of it is Jimmie Rogers' original Blue Yodel No. 8.
My father farmed (and probably did the same kind of grading work the song mentions) with mules as a young man, and I'm sure he listened to this song from its composition in 1930. Jimmie was always a favorite of his, and I heard them all.
