I just finished reading "All for Nothing" by Walter Kempowski, an excellent novel about a German family in east Prussia near the end of World War II.
Some other unusual WWII novels that I highly recommend:
- "The Time of the Assassins" by Godfrey Blunden
 - "Life With a Star" by Jiri Weil
 - "Mendelssohn Is on the Roof" by Jiri Weil
 - "The Balkan Trilogy" by Olivia Manning
 - "The Levant Trilogy" by Olivia Manning
 - "An Operational Necessity" by Gwyn Griffin
