Marine service in the World War was legendary. Two regiments, the 5th and 6th Marines were awarded French Fourragere for bravery in the battles of Belleau Wood, Soissons, and Champagne. That decoration, something like a braided green rope, is still worn by Marines serving in those regiments.
The Marines quickly established their reputation as top-notch fighters. My great-uncle saw combat and later served for a while in the occupation forces. He returned home to teach school in Glendale, Arizona.
