Today is the anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
There are certain dates that sear the memory of various generations. I can recite details of where I was and what I was doing when the news arrived of President Kennedy's assassination. My children will probably have similar memories about the September 11 attacks.
For my parents, the memorable event was Pearl Harbor. They were living in Phoenix, Arizona and the quiet of the Sunday afternoon was broken by a newspaper boy riding through the neighborhood and shouting "Special edition!" And all of the people got off their front porches and walked out to the street.
That is the way history visits you.
