Don't Hunker Down

When times are hard, reach out. Don't hunker down.

It can be tempting to isolate yourself and to go off on a mountain top to think deep thoughts. Being somewhat of a recluse myself, I'm the last person to discount the value of seclusion but it will hurt unless combined with sincere and active efforts to pick the brains of others.

These contacts need not be formal brainstorming sessions. You may get more from a casual observation made by an old friend over a cup of coffee than you glean from a morning of teams, flip charts, and case scenarios.

Look for informal partners. Talk with people and groups who can help to ease some of the burdens while you in turn assist them. Ask yourself how you can stop making things harder. That may be a more valuable question than how you can make things easier.

Your most damaging competitor may be yourself.
