With July 4 almost here, many Americans will be thinking of the people who founded the nation. We were blessed with an extraordinary assembly of leaders who possessed a sound combination of principle and pragmatism as well as raw ability.
If I were to pick my favorite of the founding fathers, it would be George Washington. He was the essential man; a leader who possessed the ability to be the universal choice of such talented individuals as Jefferson, Franklin, Madison, and Adams. There are fascinating and informative biographies of all of the founders, but I'm not sure if the mysterious and intangible qualities of Washington have been clearly identified.
Invite Franklin, Madison, and Jefferson to a "dream dinner" with the greats. Throw in Hamilton too. [Adams might be somewhat of a pill.]
I'll ask to be seated next to George Washington.
