In response to the graceless remarks by Emma Thompson, here's Frederic Raphael on why Audrey Hepburn was a real star. An excerpt:
I don’t know what sparked Emma Thompson’s brave decision to put Audrey through her spiked wringer, but it wasn’t only modesty, was it? If admiring Audrey is a “guy-thing” what does that tell us about guys, except that Audrey carried herself with enough grace for countless men to think she was some kind of an angel? One of them happened to be that roaring boy Albert Finney, fresh from making Tom Jones and not your average star-struck push-over when it came to girls with gossamer wings. If he fell, anyone could; and did he ever! As for Audrey’s fashion-icon status, countless girls have thought it had to be easy to look as cool as she did, and wound up looking like Victoria Beckham. Being Audrey Hepburn was some trick to turn.

Did Frederic Raphael not just do to Victoria Beckham what Thompson did to Hepburn?
Sheila,
You may well be correct. I've started a Victoria Beckham research project.
Thanks!
