When Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 10 May 1940, he was over sixty-five years old, already qualified for an old-age pension. His energy was undiminished and the flame of his eloquence was undimmed, but many of his fellow countrymen, whatever their politics, considered him notorious rather than famous and regarded him more favorably as a writer than a politician. For the remaining twenty-five years of his life his fame was spread throughout the world and that fame was matched by reverence and affection.
