How can I make it easier for my subordinates to do their jobs?

Quit?

Rick,

Ha! In many cases that is the solution.

My answer: A supervisor's job (at all levels of an organization) is to do everything in their power to remove the obstacles that prevent the people on their teams from being successful. Many times, only someone with "signing" authority can do this.

This means getting them the training they need, the tools they need or removing toxic or unproductive co-workers from the team.

Supervisors often "know" they need to do this, but they don't want to ruffle the feathers of their peers or superiors (i.e. by asking for money or to fire a "favorite").

This is probably why many employees wish their supervisors would just "quit": because they don't feel supported in their work, and feel that their bosses spend too much time playing nicey-nice politics instead of working to help them be more productive.
