Needed: A Good Fit and a Mirror

I'm not saying that they are:

  • Stupid
  • Lazy
  • Ignorant
  • Unmotivated or
  • Unwilling.
I am saying that they are unable to do what needs to be done in this particular situation at this specific time.

All of us are incompetent at various tasks. The last thing we need on an important mission is a person who is highly motivated and energetic but inept and who will quickly move us down the wrong road. The wizard on one task can be a disaster on another.

We all know that.

So why do we pretend that it is not important? When it comes to making assignments or selections, are we falling into some of those negative bullet points?

Thank you for saying this.

I like to use the analyogy of running. Although I'm a good athlete in many ways and an excellent swimmer, I can't run worth beans. I could be paid highly to run, get excellent training, have every motivation in the world, and though I could run slightly faster than I can now, I still would be beaten by almost anyone over the age of 7.

So if I'm in a relay and we come in last due to my plodding nature, is it really the fault that I didn't try hard enough, or that I was on the relay in the first place?

Dan,

To paraphrase the great Drucker, we all need to play to our strengths and make our weaknesses as irrelevant as possible.
