Forget for a moment about the war and the economy. As the new year begins, we should consider a few minor changes that would be of immediate benefit to the nation.
- Pass legislation requiring the public flogging of anyone connected with spyware or adware. The amount of time and money that they've robbed from computer users is difficult to calculate. These weasels need to be hurt and punished.
- Require that any executive who gives the final approval on pop-up advertising have his or her name, photo, and office address attached to the ad along with the words, "I approved this unsolicited and unwelcome interruption."
- Mandate that anyone who sends unsolicited faxes spend at least a week or two on a chain gang. Per violation, of course.
That's it. Only three. But in a world in which the louts often seem to set the rules, every little bit counts.
