The Presence of Timidity

The timid cloak themselves in passive virtues such as caring and respect while hiding from the vigorous virtues of ambition and courage. Their actions, and more often their inaction, can burden organizations and destroy morale. Whenever you see the following, look for the fingerprints of the timid:

  • Lack of urgency.
  • Tolerance of inappropriate conduct.
  • Denial.
  • Stilted creativity.
  • Ostracism of mavericks.
  • Political correctness.
  • Weasel words.
  • Lack of candor.
  • A preference for style over substance.
  • People who talk a good game.
  • Opportunism disguised as pragmatism.
  • An uncertain trumpet.
  • An inability to say no.
