Life and History

There is no doubt that someone was brewing tea a few blocks away when the guillotine was being set up in revolutionary Paris. In Warsaw, salesmen were visiting clients and patients in hospitals were nervously awaiting operations the day before Hitler's troops stormed across the border. We might be jarred by the number of people who were pondering their computer screens, talking about some movie or waiting for the elevator when the airliner smashed into their offices at the World Trade Center.

Amid the stir of history, the usual aspects of life totter on. People make plans, fall in love, trim bushes, shine shoes, jump in cabs, write notes, and worry - seriously worry - about what will later seem minor.

History is an unannounced guest.
