An Accurate Scale

We broke down and bought a new bathroom scale the other day. An accurate scale. One that doesn't give approximations like the last one we owned. The old one could be negotiated with because, after all, each time you stepped on it a different number would emerge. You always had a choice of higher, somewhat lower, and a lot lower and guess which one you'd choose.

The new one is ruthlessly precise. It goes into decimals and there's nothing bouncy or loose about it. You can adjust your toes and expel your breath without instantly losing five pounds. All in all, a rather glum companion. A nudge.

It's like having a little slice of the doctor's office in the corner.

The evil corner.
