Random Thoughts

You can tell clients about the many virtues of rocky road ice cream, but if they want vanilla, give them vanilla. Those oh-so-clever executives fool themselves far more than they fool others. When it comes to a crisis, don't rely on anyone who has never been punched in the stomach. At some point along the way, Harry Truman's "The Buck Stops Here" became "I first read about it in the newspapers." Does our current field of novelists match those writing in the Fifties? In a perfect world, each of us would have a stint as a street cop, a social worker, and the owner of a small restaurant. I have never regretted buying flowers. Each day involves getting into the world and getting away from it. How many voters could pass the test to become a naturalized citizen? Humility is one of the most under-rated characteristics of great leadership. It would jar us if we knew how many of the assumptions we hold about others are just flat-out wrong. It should be a rare year in which we don't make an important personal discovery about life. After each major meeting, review what was not said. Every manager is a talent scout and a sales rep. We need to talk more about what it means to be civilized. Many of those who denounce "haters" also fit in that category. The basics will usually remind you if they are being ignored but some may sit in the corner and watch the disaster unfold. We can do much better than we think we can but first we must think we can. Our schedule is either an ally or an adversary and often it's the latter. Have so many good habits that there is no room for the bad ones. Beware of those who are proud of their ignorance. Every day we rely upon the good work of unrecognized heroes.
