Taking A Hit

The meeting is bogged down on a point. It is evident that unless someone takes responsibility for a problem which could be justly shared then nothing will get done. You "take the hit" for the problem in order to get things moving.

Another event. An attorney is making snide, borderline personal, comments with which you thoroughly disagree. You'd love to engage in an argument but both of you have been hired by the client to discuss a topic in front of the client's management team. You believe it would be unprofessional for the two outsiders to have a row. You say nothing and focus on the key issues.

Life is messy. If your view is that the mission comes first, there will be times when you will have to set aside your ego and focus on the results. Unfortunately, this means the person who cares least may avoid responsibility or get away with poor behavior. Life is also unfair.

If you are a third party and witness this bit of street theater, recognize that what is really going on may not be what appears to be happening on the surface.
