Deciding about Deterrence

An interesting National Journal article on whether deterrence would work with a nuclear-armed Iran.

It doesn't, however, adequately examine two things:

  1. What happens if a nuclear-armed Iran becomes more of a safe haven for terrorist groups than it is now and openly distributes nuclear weapons to terrorists?
  2. What if the deterrence advocates are wrong? The historical examples cited, with the possible exception of Hitler, do not involve deterring what amounts to a death cult.
