In Every Large Organization

In every large organization, you can find people who:

  • Secretly believe that they're not up to the job;
  • Think they are outstanding but are truly mediocre;
  • Need serious counseling;
  • Should have been fired years ago;
  • Should have been promoted years ago;
  • Don't understand how the organization operates;
  • Are engaged in a serious job search;
  • Are looking for a calling in life;
  • Would make a great CEO;
  • Have retired on the job;
  • Are worried about their health;
  • Have an undeserved reputation;
  • Are two reorganizations away from being let go;
  • Are 15 years behind in professional development;
  • Successfully manage around the trivial;
  • Have major problems in their personal life;
  • Have dreams which do not involve their current job;
  • Are being carried by their employees;
  • Have unspoken ideas which could seriously improve the organization;
  • Feel trapped;
  • Feel unappreciated;
  • Are unappreciated;
  • Are satisfactory performers but who would be wizards in another job;
  • Are in exile;
  • Have sacrificed a great deal for the organization;
  • Go above and beyond on a daily basis;
  • Exemplify decency and excellence.

I talked to an employee (entry level clerk) at Humana yesterday. She had no idea that she was one of 52,000 employees nor that the company grossed 43 billion in 2013 or that they have 13 million customers. Her supervisor, on the other hand, had access to more helpful information about my account and claims.
In every large organization that's too large, there is a high degree of bureacracy and inefficiency that bogs the mind, and the process/

Gary,

I've had similar experiences. It all gets back to executing the basics. Think of how often supervisors and employees have completely different views of what the job entails and that gap has existed for years!

Great Michael. I think I'm going to paste this on my office door. Please include it in the book. E.
