First Paragraph

Anti-colonialists often talk about 'the colonial project', as if an empire such as the British one was a single, unitary enterprise with a coherent essence. Then they characterize that supposed essence in terms of domination, despotism, oppression, racism, white supremacy, exploitation, theft or unconstrained violence. In this way they imply that its driving motives were lust for power, delight in domination, racial contempt and greed.
