First Paragraph

In every family worthy of the name, there are especial stories that so early amuse, then later tickle and tantalize memory that the phrase which recalls one of them becomes a shibboleth in the family. These are in-jokes, the use of which can leave an outsider so puzzled and bewildered in the presence of collective hilarity that explanations are in order, albeit convolutedly forthcoming.

- From "Harmony Ain't Easy," a short story in the book Epiphany by Ferrol Sams
