In every family worthy of the name, there are especial stories that so early amuse, then later tickle and tantalize memory that the phrase which recalls one of them becomes a shibboleth in the family. These are in-jokes, the use of which can leave an outsider so puzzled and bewildered in the presence of collective hilarity that explanations are in order, albeit convolutedly forthcoming.
