Raines is always to the point, always clear. My new book, he said, was going to be reviewed on the following Sunday in the New York Times. I thanked him for the call, but in a relaxed manner as if to suggest that I was now at an age when such news was not about to make me euphoric. Still, I was pleased. I no longer had any professional enemies who might want to tear me down in print. Consequently there was everything to look forward to and nothing to fear. But then, Theron Raines added, 'You are not going to like the last sentence of the review.'"
