In a pre-war report to his superiors, Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto gave his analysis of Japan's prospects in a war with the United States:
"If you force me to fight, I will show some real action for the first six months or a year. But if the fighting continues for two or three years, I do not have any confidence whatsoever."
