The Chilly Winds on Campus

Consider this scenario:

  • You know an excellent student with a brand-new B.A. degree.
  • The person's political views are moderate-conservative/conservative-moderate.
  • His or her career goal: to become a college professor in history, political science/government, English, or sociology. Doing so will require at least a master's degree and probably a doctorate.
Given the very left-wing political slant in most universities as well as the cost of higher education, would you encourage pursuing that goal?

I wouldn't suggest anyone enter that profession, regardless of their political affiliation. I have a cousin who got his PhD in anthropology with the goal to teach. I doubt you could find a more left-wing liberal, and he had to go to Europe to teach even without tenure.

Dan,

Excellent point. We are on the verge of a revolution in education and lengthy doctoral programs are probably on the chopping block.
