Getting Back to Common Sense

Workplaces have gotten way too bureaucratic and nervous. As a result, they have become heavy-handed; often exacerbating problems which could have been resolved with brief, simple, and direct action.

The following phrases should be revived:

  • "Let's not make a federal case out of this."
  • "Knock it off."
  • "Don't do it again."

Hi, Michael

Thank you for your post and for all the others which I always read.

Sadly, I don't think we'll see a return to the days of plain ol' common sense. Everyone wants to make a meal of everything as a way (more often than not) of justifying their position. All these meetings. All these emails. All these training courses. What for? Business is still a simple thing. You make something or you have a service and you try to make a profit. All the rest his flim flam in my humble experience.

Take care my friend

Julian

Hi Julian,

One of the problems I've noticed in workplaces is the desire to cite an unbending policy rather than having the courage to make a decision in an area that is grey. This often results in either a mindless adherence to the policy or a conscious decision to ignore it.

We live in strange times.

Thanks, as always, for your comments.

Michael
