The McGovernites parceled out delegates to that year's Democratic National Convention on the basis of race (explicitly), class (implicitly), and gender (explicitly). AFL-CIO sachem Al Barkan responded to McGovern's presidential nomination by declaring: "We aren't going to let those Harvard-Berkeley Camelots take over the party." But they did.
