Regrettably, I have to say Amen to the checklist. Spot on, and disheartening. Two bullet points in particular are especially salient in my current status as a 60-year-old trying to find another job: · There is a widespread worship of credentials and, indirectly, those who do the credentialing. And · Degrees override actual experience. I'm about to enter a job market which in many ways isn't exactly warm to people of my age, regardless of what I can offer.
The credentials bias is one of my hot buttons. So too is the selection process itself.
Since more and more employers use scanners to pick up key words from the job announcements when reviewing applications, I recommend that applicants reword their applications/resumes to echo those terms.
I also recommend using employment search and recruitment firms in order to gain a back-channel advocate.
Finding a job is one of the craziest things out there. I know of highly qualified candidates who don't even get interviewed. That portion of the market is in great need of reformation.
