Asking the Boss

This survey showing the reluctance of employees to ask the boss for advice confirms what I've seen but there is a key item that needs to be emphasized: Management's reluctance to admit the truth.

I've had long conversations with top executives who insist that their employees would not hesitate to bring management questions to their supervisors or to Human Resources and, in each case, those opinions were countered by knowledgeable people within the organization. One department head laughed when told that HR believed it was getting the truth. "We call them the anti-Personnel Department," he said.

Savvy executives open the windows and encourage employees to get helpful information from a variety of sources. They know that monopolizing information is a harmful practice that erodes effectiveness and trust.
