The Ethics of Bribery

SOX first blog has a post that raises the question of “When is it ethical to bribe?”

One of the dodges used by many companies doing business in countries where bribery is the standard is not to give money to a government official but instead to make a contribution to an institution that benefits the community. For example, they build a medical center and name it after the official.

That may work with large scale projects, but what about the daily palm-greasing needed to get minor things accomplished? And, since many minor officials depend upon bribes to supplement their income, is it ever unethical not to bribe?
