Someone else posted on this same study today, and noted that the study quality may not be as strong as one would like, "They used 705 participants living in southern Spain to evaluate the credentials of a male and female employee of a make-believe corporation who were proposed for promotion to a managerial position as a production supervisor."

I agree that the size, methodology, and locale raise a lot of questions. Even if the study is valid for Spain, its findings might not be applicable to other cultural settings.

If it isn't that wide spread now, then it's growing. Sadly, I see it in my swim team as a girl (A younger girl at that) trying to best me and torture me by gossiping and what not. And you see it in a lot schools, girls competing for guys by embarrassing and humiliating each other.

One thing that doesn't help this syndrome is the fact that at least in the United States, girls are being pressured to be the media's opinion of "beautiful". Those it leaks into peer groups and schools, making it even tougher with the pressure of their friends.
