On the Shelf

In the coming weeks I'll be discussing books by Ram Charan, Marshall Goldsmith, Nicholas Bate, Frederick Kagan, and Michael Useem.

One non-business book that has been completely absorbing: The Prince of the City: Giuliani, New York and the Genius of American Life by Fred Siegel. It provides an intriguing review of New York City politics as well as a close look at Rudy Giuliani.

An excerpt:

In the short term, [Mayor Fiorello] La Guardia screamed and bullied his way to better government. La Guardia, said New Dealer Rexford Tugwell, treated his own staff like "dogs." In one famed incident he called in a stenographer in order to humiliate a commissioner who was present. He shouted at her, "If you were any dumber, I'd make you a commissioner."

Leadership is the hot topic these days, and I think there's a lot of snake oil, but there are some serious, realistic practitioners out there. If you'd like to hear a conversation with Marshall Goldsmith about his new book, What Got You Here Won't Get You There, you can tune in the Cranky Middle Manager podcast at http://cmm.thepodcastnetwork.com/2007/01/16/the-cranky-middle-manager-79-getting-there-with-marshall-goldsmith

Keep up the good work.
