The Embrace of Excellence

Just a few thoughts::

  1. Long-term  excellence is seldom achieved overnight.
  2. Those who quickly achieve the short-term version can just as quickly lose it.
  3. A key factor in its maintenance is the strong embrace of a higher standard; an embrace so strong that the thought of reverting to the earlier lower levels is completely unacceptable. It becomes part of your very being.

A real humility is essential to embracing excellence. An honest look at one's own career and skills (no matter where you are on that path) will show that what you thought of as excellent 5 or 10 years ago is far beneath what you consider excellence today.

Once you admit this to yourself, you must admit that compared with your standards in 10 more years, what you are doing now is probably unacceptable. This humble knowledge that, no matter how good you are you can and should do better is the main imputis to driving you to greater and greater excellence in everything you do.
