The Wall Street Journal has an article on why people are so rude online. [You can find plenty of similar articles out there.] I suspect that online discussions don't turn considerate people into rude ones but instead simply facilitate those who are rude to begin with.
You can also find sites that seem to be magnets for the rude. This site isn't one of them.
The classic trolls will probably spark many a doctoral paper and yet all of the analysis may obscure a basic truth: Some people are just bad people. They would need a personality transplant to change their ways.
