I've had The Armada by Garrett Mattingly for several years after buying it at a library for 10 cents. Started reading it a few weeks ago and , in short, the book is fascinating.
I've been snatching chapters in-between work and business reading. Track down a copy and give it a try. Beautifully written. Great stuff.

You've probably heard the US victories in the Cold War and WWII as the reasons why we don't speak Russian or German. The English victory in 1588 is why we don't speak Spanish. (Or at least very well for some of us.)
