The Leadership Fit

Leadership does not resemble a light switch that can be turned on and off. It is a responsibility that can be abdicated, delegated, fumbled, destroyed, developed, enhanced, and polished and much depends upon the times and the environment.

The leader's style must fit the job and the circumstances. The more it can be integrated into the daily course of business, the more effective it will be. Good leaders have a "we" orientation, not a "they" orientation, and the strength to deal with reality and not blame others is needed. A leader who will be a smashing success with one group may not translate well with another. That's why we must always consider fit. An Eisenhower will not do well when a Patton is called for and the opposite is just as true. Beware of "one size fits all" leadership.

Know the person. Know the fit.
