When he took night classes, they asked, "Who's he trying to impress?"
When he worked late, they thought he was crazy for putting in more time for the same pay.
When he improved his writing skills and took a public speaking class, they just couldn't see how either of those applied to his current position.
Finally, after he was promoted over the heads of several more senior people, they nodded knowingly and agreed that there was only one explanation: "He must have connections."
