This made me remember "How to Manage Your Boss" by Christopher Hegarty, probably now out of print, which I found to be of tremendous help in my career a long time ago. I haven't thought about it for decades (literally) but I still recall two takeaways.
First,look at yourself and be absolutely certain you have the right job fit, and be sure that whatever problems you face really are with the boss, not the company, field or other variables.
And second, your ideas will work best if the boss imagines they were his. Planting seeds is more effective than trying to alter the landscape. Takes longer but is far more enduring.
