Engage and Detach

When to engage and when to detach? When to jump into details and when to step back to grasp the big picture? When to pull people in and when to let them run? When to delay and when to move? When to chide and when to clobber? When to accept and when to question? When to focus on the immediate and when to glance into the future?

Those questions can arise each week and the answer, while largely influenced by context, will also depend on a refined instinct.

Developing that instinct is one of the major tasks of leadership. You can't find a neat answer in a book or a workshop. There are moments when you have to know, when you are expected to know.

Show me a leader with poor instincts and I'll show you a failed leader.
