In Praise of Work

My first job was mowing a property that was so big it took five days to properly cut the grass. My employer was a wealthy man and he negotiated my pay with my father over a gin and tonic at the close of my first day of work. I had no experience, was fourteen years old and desperately wanted to learn how to ride the different tractors used for different parts of the property. It was a cash deal and I think I made $1.30 per hour. I loved it with the exception of one steep hill which had to be mowed using a push mower attached to a rope system that would have made OSHA stroke out.

Take a little time and read the rest at Cultural Offering.
