Experience
Job titles mean little or nothing. You notice the way the front desk personnel deal with a new customer. You catch the aside an executive makes when he disagrees with a candid assessment. Your ability to spot the subtle becomes one of your strengths. You can not only read between-the-lines, you can also identify what was purposely omitted. Your sharp eye can discern a weasel word or suspicious phrase at 500 paces. You know when to engage and what to ignore.
If you start thinking you're super-bright, pause a moment and remember your scars.
